WHAT THE SAFE ZONE SHOWS

A practical visual guide for important content

The inner boundary gives you a consistent place to keep critical text, faces, logos, and focal details away from the outer edge. It is a design aid that helps you inspect the image before it is shown in different contexts.

Edge spacing

Keep important elements from feeling crowded when the thumbnail is reduced or displayed beside other videos.

Bottom-right overlap

Leave breathing room where a duration badge may appear over the thumbnail in common video layouts.

Mobile visibility

Fine text and small details become less useful as the available display area gets smaller.

WHY THE BOTTOM-RIGHT CORNER MATTERS

Avoid placing the message under interface details

The bottom-right overlay in the tool is an approximate reminder that interface elements can cover a small part of a thumbnail. Use it to spot collisions with labels, faces, logos, or other details you want viewers to see first.

WHAT TO KEEP AWAY FROM EDGES

Protect the elements that carry the idea

Check headline text, faces, product edges, logos, arrows, and other high-priority details. Background texture can usually extend farther toward the edge than the information viewers need to understand.

  • Keep short headline text comfortably inside the inner boundary.
  • Give faces and products enough space that a crop does not remove their useful context.
  • Check logos and arrows for accidental edge crowding.
  • Review the image again at a smaller mobile-style size.
SAFE ZONE VS. READABILITY

A safe position does not make tiny text readable

Safe placement and readability are related but different checks. An element can sit comfortably inside the boundary and still be too small, low-contrast, or visually busy at thumbnail size. For correct dimensions and aspect ratio, see the YouTube thumbnail size guide. Use the YouTube Thumbnail Checker for a broader visual check, and the Thumbnail Preview page to inspect realistic placements.
