The thumbnail setup PreviewClick checks

These values come from PreviewClick’s existing browser checks and upload guidance. They are practical setup targets, not a promise that a correctly sized image will perform well.

Aspect ratioApproximately 16:9The checker treats ratios within a small tolerance as 16:9.

WHY DIMENSIONS MATTER

1280 × 720 gives you a useful 16:9 starting point

A large 16:9 source gives text, faces, and other details enough pixels to remain usable when the image is reduced. But the source file is not the same thing as the rendered thumbnail: Search, Home, Suggested, and Mobile layouts show it much smaller.

Source image

Start with a sharp image at the recommended dimensions or higher, then export in a supported format.

Rendered display

At smaller placements, fine text and low-contrast details can disappear even when the original file is 1280 × 720.

Practical test

Use PreviewClick’s realistic placements to see whether the idea still reads after the size reduction.

SIZE CHECKLIST

Before you publish, check the image in context

  • Is the image approximately 16:9?
  • Is the source image large enough to stay sharp?
  • Is text still readable when reduced?
  • Is the main subject large enough?
  • Are important elements away from the edges?
  • Does the thumbnail still work on mobile?
  • Is the file format supported?
THUMBNAIL SIZE FAQ

Questions about YouTube thumbnail size

What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?

PreviewClick recommends 1280 × 720 or higher at approximately 16:9, matching the dimensions used by its existing checks and upload guidance.

What aspect ratio should a YouTube thumbnail use?

Use approximately 16:9. PreviewClick checks the ratio with a small tolerance because real source dimensions may vary slightly.

Is 1280 × 720 the right size for a YouTube thumbnail?

It is the project’s recommended starting point. Higher-resolution images can also be accepted, but the image should still be checked at realistic display sizes.

What file types work in PreviewClick?

The current upload flow accepts JPG, PNG, and WebP files.

Why can a thumbnail look blurry at the correct size?

Correct dimensions do not repair a soft source image, poor export, compression, or fine details that disappear when the thumbnail is reduced.

How large should text be on a YouTube thumbnail?

There is no project-defined universal text-size number. Use the Mobile and Actual Size previews to check whether the words remain readable.

Does correct thumbnail size prevent edge cropping or overlays?

No. Dimensions and safe placement are separate checks. Use the Safe Zone Checker to inspect edges and the approximate bottom-right duration area.
